Chinese technology website TechNode is entering the Russian-language market. The project’s investor is Andrey Prokhorovich, owner of consulting company Eurasia Development and Dodo Pizza’s partner in China. There is little information about Chinese startups in Russia, but competitors warn that this is a very narrow market.
Chinese technology media outlet TechNode is entering the Russian-language market, Andrey Prokhorovich, owner of Eurasia Development Ltd and an investor in the Russian version, told Kommersant. According to him, TechNode Russia will cover technologies and startups in Asia, and within a year the share of translated and original content is expected to reach 50/50. He expects the core audience to consist of entrepreneurs who “work or would like to work with China.” Lavrenty Klimov, previously COO of Eurasia Development, has become Editor-in-Chief of TechNode Russia. The editorial team is based in China and currently consists of seven people.
TechNode was founded in 2007. In addition to its own website, the company operates the local Chinese version of the US technology media outlet TechCrunch. In June, TechNode’s English-language website received 610,000 visits, according to SimilarWeb.
Eurasia Development has provided strategic consulting services in China since 2012. Its clients include Dodo Pizza and SkyEng.
TechNode Russia does not plan to run advertising and will instead rely on “indirect monetization,” Andrey Prokhorovich explained. Within a year, the project may introduce paid subscriptions for selected content. TechNode Russia also plans to conduct market research, organize events and provide investment analytics on Chinese startups. At present, Russia “does not have a media resource focused specifically on technologies in Asia”; the closest media outlets to the new project are vc.ru and Rusbase, Mr. Prokhorovich believes.
The amount invested in the project has not been disclosed. In any media outlet operating under a franchise model, the franchise itself usually accounts for the main costs, says Maria Lapuk, co-owner of Vinci Agency, which operates in the Chinese market. Based on a staff of seven and an average journalist salary in China of USD 3,500–4,000, annual payroll costs could amount to around USD 300,000, she estimates.
